Fat Bike Grooming Report

February 13th

We’re currently in a drought period, and the daily freeze/thaw cycle has created a lot of ice. There’s snow in the forecast so we’re hopeful for a bit of a reset which will allow us to groom again.

The upper section of Mountain Shadows is marginal, but not bad when it has frozen over. A lot of foot traffic through there has created bumps, but it’s definitely rideable, and better the higher you go. The issue is that you have to get to it. If you know of any creative ways to get over there, such as the quad road up from the Bush Party/Woodlot Ride entrance, that’s preferable to the lower trail icecapades. Most of the ice is gone above the road crossing on Reflection Lake and the landing at the top of Chute the Duck.

Ride with caution on ice, and studs are a must. When riding on ice, you want your tire pressure to be higher. This allows the studs to bite in a bit more.

Avoid riding the trails during the heat of the day. There are a few good tire ruts on places like Magic Dragon and Huff and Puff from some over-eager fat bikers.

If you have any suggestions for what you’d like to see groomed, or if you’ve snowshoed something you’d like to ride, send us an email at admin@goldencyclingclub.com

Remember, fat bike trails are for riding fat bikes only; ie. 4″+ tires. Put the skinny tires away for the season. If you’re making ruts, you’re wrecking the trails and frustrating the groomer!
